Rockstar Games has finally broken its public silence over the Grand Theft Auto VI leaks that have flooded social media during the past week. In a statement posted through the company’s official social channels on August 26, Rockstar confirmed that unauthorized GTA 6 gameplay footage had leaked and described the situation as “heartbreaking for our team.”

The response arrives unusually late by internet standards, where seven days might as well be an archaeological era. Rockstar had remained publicly quiet while new clips appeared across X, Discord and other platforms, leaving copyright removals and legal maneuvering to do most of the talking.

Rockstar’s message changes that.

Rather than challenging individual claims made by the people distributing the material, the studio focused on the effect of the leaks on its developers, the approaching official GTA 6 gameplay reveal, and the risk that story spoilers could spoil parts of the finished game before its November release.

Rockstar confirms the leaked GTA 6 footage

So… one particularly important detail sits inside Rockstar’s wording.

The studio referred directly to “videos of Grand Theft Auto VI gameplay” leaking online. That removes much of the remaining uncertainty over whether the recent clips were genuine. Rockstar did not, however, confirm every claim surrounding the leak, including speculation that the person or group responsible possesses an entire playable copy of GTA 6.

Reports over the past week have linked the material to an online identity using the name Cyberleek. Clips reportedly showed gameplay involving protagonist Jason, locations around Vice City and other previously unseen elements. Some leaked material was subsequently removed following copyright claims.

The alleged leaker has also attached the campaign to complaints about digital preorders, physical game ownership and other industry practices. A cryptocurrency component was thrown into the mix as well, because apparently an enormous GTA leak wasn’t chaotic enough on its own. Rockstar wisely avoided wandering into that particular circus in its statement.

Rockstar apologizes for how long GTA 6 information has taken

The stranger part of Rockstar’s response is that the company also acknowledged its notoriously slow drip of official information.

Rockstar apologized for how long development and the release of new details have taken, while describing GTA 6 as “nearly there.” The comment is noteworthy because the game currently has a November 19, 2026 release date.

That acknowledgement gets closer to one of the frustrations surrounding GTA 6 marketing.

Rockstar revealed the first trailer in December 2023. Trailer 2 followed much later, while long stretches between major announcements created an information vacuum large enough for rumors, fake screenshots, supposed insiders and increasingly elaborate internet detective work to flourish.

None of that excuses stealing unfinished material, of course. It does explain why virtually every scrap connected with GTA 6 receives absurd levels of attention.

Rockstar appears to understand the problem. Its response specifically mentions the lengthy wait for official gameplay and information rather than pretending communication has been flowing freely.

The GTA 6 Extended Look is still happening August 27

The leaks have not changed Rockstar’s immediate marketing plans.

The company confirmed that Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look will go ahead on August 27 at 3 PM ET, giving players the substantial official look at the game they have been waiting for. Rockstar’s GTA 6 website currently advertises the presentation prominently.

That timing makes Rockstar’s August 26 statement rather interesting.

The company is speaking publicly only one day before it planned to show considerably more of GTA 6 anyway. The obvious objective is to regain control of the conversation before its carefully prepared presentation arrives.

Good luck with that. Once leaked footage has been copied across thousands of accounts, Discord servers and private groups, putting the toothpaste back into Vice City’s extremely expensive tube becomes difficult.

But still, an official presentation gives Rockstar something leaked footage cannot provide: context.

Development builds can contain unfinished animation, temporary assets, debugging elements and systems that change before release. Carefully selected footage can show how Rockstar actually intends the game to look and play rather than asking people to judge isolated clips ripped from an unknown build.

Take-Two is also pursuing the leak through legal channels

Public silence did not mean Rockstar and parent company Take-Two Interactive had been sitting around refreshing X.

Take-Two reportedly sought subpoenas involving Microsoft and Discord while attempting to identify people connected to the distribution of leaked GTA 6 material. The legal requests targeted information associated with accounts and servers believed to have played a role in circulating the footage.

That approach should surprise nobody familiar with Take-Two.

The publisher has historically defended Rockstar material aggressively, and GTA 6 has already experienced one extraordinary security breach. In September 2022, unfinished development footage from the game appeared online years before release.

The 2026 situation is different because GTA 6 is much closer to launch and the leaked material appears to come from a considerably newer version of the game.

Story information is consequently a bigger concern.

Rockstar specifically warned that the intended experience could be affected by spoilers and asked players to wait until release rather than having major portions of the game revealed beforehand.

GTA 6 remains scheduled for November 19, 2026

Nothing in Rockstar’s statement suggests another delay.

Grand Theft Auto VI remains scheduled for November 19, 2026, with Rockstar currently listing PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S as launch platforms. The company has not announced a PC release date on its official GTA 6 page.

Jason and Lucia will lead the story, which takes players back to Vice City and across the fictional state of Leonida. Rockstar describes the pair as being pulled into a criminal conspiracy after an easy score goes wrong, forcing them to depend on each other to survive.

The larger question surrounding the leaks is no longer whether Rockstar will acknowledge them. It has.

What matters next is whether the unauthorized footage has actually spoiled Rockstar’s August 27 presentation or merely given millions of people another reason to watch it.

There is a decent argument for the second outcome.

Leaked clips may reveal mechanics and locations, yet fragmented footage is very different from seeing the game presented coherently, at proper quality, with Rockstar explaining what players are actually looking at. The leaks stole part of the studio’s carefully controlled reveal. They may also have accidentally made tomorrow’s official presentation even harder to ignore.

For a company famous for saying very little, Rockstar has finally said enough to settle the biggest question surrounding the leak: the footage is real, the studio is unhappy about it, and GTA 6 is still heading toward November 19.

The internet, naturally, will spend the remaining time examining every palm tree at 800% zoom.
