Summary
  • GTA 6 preorders jumped 436% after the Netflix showcase, with estimated PS5 orders rising 606% versus 127% on Xbox.
  • Rockstar showed nearly 27 minutes of GTA 6 captured on PS5, giving Sony valuable exposure despite the game also launching on Xbox.
  • PlayStation already accounted for roughly 77% of estimated GTA 6 preorders, and Rockstar’s ‘Plays Best on PS5’ branding strengthens that association.

Rockstar Games’ 27-minute GTA 6 presentation sent preorders sharply higher, but the biggest winner was Sony. PS5 orders jumped far faster than Xbox orders after the Netflix premiere, while Rockstar’s own marketing continues to put PlayStation hardware front and center.

Rockstar Games had plenty to gain from putting Grand Theft Auto VI on Netflix. Netflix had plenty to gain from borrowing one of gaming’s biggest releases for an afternoon. Yet the numbers emerging after Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look suggest a third company walked away with an especially nice souvenir: Sony.

Sensor Tower estimates indicate that GTA 6 preorders climbed 436% on August 27 compared with the previous day, following the Netflix premiere. The split between consoles was considerably less balanced. Estimated PS5 preorders increased 606%, while Xbox Series X|S preorders rose 127%.

Those percentages require a little restraint before anyone starts preparing another funeral for Xbox. They measure growth against each platform’s own previous-day level, rather than saying Sony sold 4.8 copies for every Xbox copy that day. Still, the direction is difficult to miss.

GTA 6 was already heavily tilted toward PlayStation, and the Netflix event appears to have tilted it further.

GTA 6 preorders were already favoring PS5

Sony did not suddenly acquire its GTA 6 advantage on August 27.

Sensor Tower estimated roughly 4.6 million GTA 6 preorders around the time of the Netflix presentation, with approximately 77% attributed to PlayStation and 23% to Xbox. Those are modeled estimates rather than sales figures released by Rockstar Games or parent company Take-Two Interactive, an important distinction when numbers this large start circulating around the internet wearing fake mustaches and pretending to be official statistics.

Take-Two has been far less specific. CEO Strauss Zelnick described GTA 6 preorders as “exceptional” and acknowledged that customers can still cancel reservations, which is precisely why the company has avoided treating preorder estimates as completed sales.

The Netflix showcase nevertheless produced another large burst of activity. Sensor Tower estimates put preorder volume on August 27 and August 28 roughly 572% above the average daily level during the preceding 30 days.

PlayStation received the lion’s share of that momentum.

Rockstar put GTA 6 on PS5 for the world to see

The reason Sony benefited is not particularly mysterious.

Netflix explicitly stated that the entire Extended Look was captured from in-game footage running on PlayStation 5. Rockstar says the same thing on its official GTA 6 page.

That matters because this was not a 90-second teaser filled with carefully edited snippets.

Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look runs 26 minutes and 48 seconds, giving viewers their most substantial official look yet at Vice City, Leonida, Jason, Lucia, driving, combat, exploration and Rockstar’s densely populated environments.

For millions of viewers, therefore, the first question was effectively answered before they could ask it: Which console can run GTA 6 looking like this?

The presentation answered: PS5.

Xbox Series X|S will also receive GTA 6 on launch day, yet Microsoft hardware did not receive equivalent technical exposure during the presentation. Xbox-focused coverage noted the same awkward reality: the footage was captured on PS5, leaving Xbox players to infer how the Series X and Series S editions will compare.

That is valuable advertising for Sony even though GTA 6 is not a PlayStation exclusive.

The “Plays Best on PS5” message makes the relationship clearer

Rockstar’s current GTA 6 website goes further than merely disclosing the capture platform.

The official page now displays “Plays Best On PlayStation 5” branding while listing both PS5 and Xbox Series X|S as launch platforms. Rockstar also directs visitors toward PlayStation’s dedicated page for GTA 6 features.

That language makes Sony’s privileged marketing position rather difficult to overlook.

What remains unclear is the exact contractual arrangement behind it. Neither Rockstar nor Sony has publicly laid out a complete GTA 6 marketing-rights agreement detailing payments, duration or every benefit included.

Calling the game a PlayStation exclusive would therefore be flatly wrong.

Calling PlayStation the console receiving preferential promotional treatment, though, requires considerably less imagination.

Rockstar used PS5 footage for its second trailer as well, and Sony has previously incorporated GTA 6 directly into PlayStation marketing. The Netflix presentation simply placed that association in front of an unusually broad audience.

Netflix gave Sony exposure outside normal gaming channels

The Netflix experiment also expanded GTA 6 beyond the usual YouTube-and-Twitch routine.

The presentation premiered globally for Netflix subscribers on August 27 at 3 p.m. ET, six hours before Rockstar made it freely available through YouTube and its own website. Netflix described the collaboration as a first-look event intended to bring one of gaming’s largest releases to its worldwide audience.

Sensor Tower recorded a substantial response.

During the hour when the presentation began, Netflix viewership increased about 35% from the previous hour and roughly 50% compared with the same time one day earlier. Mobile app usage was nearly 50% above the average for the equivalent period across the previous 12 Thursdays, while web traffic climbed more than 125% against that benchmark.

Rockstar consequently received a mainstream streaming event rather than another game trailer upload.

Sony received something rather useful inside that event: approximately 27 minutes of GTA 6 demonstrating itself on PlayStation hardware.

Microsoft got its logo on the list of supported platforms.

Not quite the same prize.

Did the Netflix event actually cause the PS5 preorder surge?

The timing strongly suggests that the Extended Look contributed to the preorder spike. A 436% day-over-day increase arriving on the exact date of Rockstar’s biggest GTA 6 presentation is hardly subtle.

Proving that PS5 footage specifically caused the disproportionate 606% PlayStation increase, however, is harder.

PlayStation already held roughly three quarters of Sensor Tower’s estimated GTA 6 preorders before the event. Its larger user base for the game, Sony’s existing GTA 6 campaign, regional console preferences and differences in preorder behavior could all influence the result.

The 606% versus 127% figures are also percentage increases from different starting points, not a direct count of PS5 units versus Xbox units sold on August 27.

Those caveats do not erase the result. They simply prevent a correlation from dressing itself up as laboratory-grade causation.

Sony may be GTA 6’s biggest platform winner

GTA 6 launches on November 19, 2026 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, meaning Xbox owners are getting the same core release date as PlayStation owners. Rockstar has not announced a PC version for launch.

Yet marketing can shape which console consumers mentally associate with a multiplatform game.

Rockstar’s messaging currently links GTA 6 with PS5 gameplay capture, “Plays Best On PS5” branding and dedicated PlayStation feature promotion. Sensor Tower’s preorder estimates show PlayStation already controlling roughly 77% of reservations, followed by a much larger percentage surge after the Netflix event.

Sony does not need GTA 6 exclusivity to benefit enormously from GTA 6.

It merely needs consumers who are buying a new console for Rockstar’s game to think “PS5” first.

The Netflix showcase gave them nearly 27 minutes of encouragement.
