Microsoft Raises Xbox Game Pass Ultimate to $30, Limiting Day-One Access to Its Most Expensive Tier
Fortnite Crew and Ubisoft Plus Classics are added to Ultimate, while Premium and Essential get delayed access to first-party releases.
Summary
- Xbox Game Pass Ultimate jumps to $30 per month, and it’s the only tier with day-one access to games like The Outer Worlds 2 and Black Ops 7.
- Microsoft adds Fortnite Crew and Ubisoft Plus Classics to Ultimate, but critics say the extras don’t justify the steep price hike.
- Lower tiers get new names: Premium at $15 adds PC games (no day-one releases) while Essential at $10 mainly covers multiplayer access.
Microsoft has overhauled its Xbox Game Pass subscription service, introducing new names and added features across its tiers.
But for many players, the changes amount to a single clear takeaway: access to new releases the day they arrive will now cost $30 a month.

Game Pass Ultimate, the company’s flagship tier, rises from $20 to $30 per month. It remains the only plan that includes day-one access to titles such as The Outer Worlds 2 and Call of Duty: Black Ops 7.
For subscribers who once considered this the service’s main attraction, the price hike is a steep one.
A More Expensive Bundle
Microsoft is attempting to soften the increase by bundling in other subscriptions.
Game Pass Ultimate now comes with Fortnite Crew, normally priced at $12 per month, which includes the battle pass and 1,000 V-Bucks each month.
The tier also folds in the Ubisoft Plus Classics catalog, with games ranging from Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag to last year’s Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown.
The additions may appeal to some.
But for players uninterested in Fortnite or Ubisoft’s back catalog, the perks offer little consolation for a $10 monthly increase.
Other Tiers, New Names
The lower tiers have also been rebranded.
-
Game Pass Premium (formerly Standard) costs $15 per month and now includes PC games. It will eventually add new first-party titles, though Microsoft has promised they will arrive only “within a year of their launch,” according to its announcement. One major caveat: Call of Duty titles are specifically excluded from this window.
-
Game Pass Essential (previously Core) remains $10 per month. It includes a selection of PC titles but is largely aimed at players who want online multiplayer access.
Microsoft’s Framing
The company describes the $30 Ultimate tier as a reflection of its “expanded catalog, new partner benefits, and upgraded cloud gaming experience.”
The framing suggests the added services are meant to justify the higher cost.
But analysts note that price increases were already a leading reason subscribers left the service.
According to a survey shared by industry analyst Mat Piscatella, the subscription’s expense was cited most often as the cause for cancellation.
The restructuring may do little to reverse that perception. While Microsoft emphasizes profitability and benefits for developers, Xbox president says Game Pass is profitable and good for creators, despite alleged division over the subscription model, the shift highlights the tension between adding content and keeping the service affordable for a broad audience.
