The Essentials

Looks like World of Warcraft: Cataclysm Classic is hitting a little speed bump. The much-anticipated Hour of Twilight patch, set to be the final major update for this expansion, is being delayed past the original January 2025 release window. This leaves WoW players with more time to soak in the Rage of the Firelands update, which drops on October 29.

Rage of the Firelands brings in a few treats for players. There’s the return of the Firelands raid, scheduled to open on November 7, along with the questline to grab Dragonwrath, Tarecgosa’s Rest, a Legendary staff that comes with an exclusive flying mount. Cataclysm Classic is also throwing in some shiny new features like high-definition textures and the Protocol Inferno Heroic Difficulty dungeons. So yeah, while the big final patch is on hold, there’s still plenty to keep everyone busy.

In case you missed it, World of Warcraft is also throwing a nostalgic Twitch Drop event to celebrate the game’s 20th anniversary. That’s happening on October 22, so you might want to mark your calendars if you’re into freebies.

Now let’s talk about that Hour of Twilight delay. The official WoW Classic Devs account mentioned on Twitter that the Dragonwrath acquisition rate is being increased. Oh, and they threw in a little update, confirming that the Rage of the Firelands update is being extended past January 2025, which pushes Hour of Twilight back to February at the earliest. Great, right?

The original plan for Hour of Twilight was to drop in January 2025, just seven months after Cataclysm Classic launched on May 20. That’s a lot quicker compared to past expansions like Burning Crusade Classic (which had 11 months between its launch and final raid) and Wrath of the Lich King Classic, which took a whole 16 months. So yeah, Cataclysm was speeding things up—until now.

At this point, there’s no specific word on how long the delay will actually be. Chances are it’ll be a month or two, so we’re probably looking at a February or March 2025 release. Dragonwrath itself takes anywhere from four to twelve weeks to craft, depending on your guild’s raid difficulty. The extra time should give players a shot at finishing up a couple more of those Legendaries before the final patch hits.

As for what happens after Hour of Twilight? That’s still up in the air, but some recently discovered sha-corrupted tiger and cloud serpent mounts on the Public Test Realm have got people talking. Could this be a hint that Mists of Pandaria Classic is on the horizon? No one’s saying for sure, but it wouldn’t be a shock if that announcement lands during the upcoming Warcraft Direct later this year. Keep your eyes peeled for that.
