Resident Evil Ends Five-Year Streak with No New Game in 2024
Capcom breaks its streak of annual Resident Evil releases for the first time in five years.
- No new Resident Evil game in 2024, ending a five-year streak of annual releases.
- Rumors suggest Resident Evil 9 and remakes of Code: Veronica and Zero are in development.
- Capcom may also be considering a second remake of the original Resident Evil with modern gameplay elements.
Capcom has been cranking out Resident Evil games like clockwork for years, but 2024 might just throw a wrench in that pattern. For the first time in five years, it’s looking like there won’t be a new Resident Evil title hitting the shelves.
That’s kind of wild when you think about it—since 1996, Capcom has managed to keep the franchise alive with a pretty consistent release schedule. The longest gap between releases happened from 1998’s Resident Evil 2 to 2007’s The Umbrella Chronicles, but now we’re about to break another record for silence.

Earlier this year, there was still a glimmer of hope. Some fans believed Resident Evil might keep the streak going with a late 2024 release. Spoiler: It didn’t happen. When the series didn’t make an appearance at the PlayStation State of Play, hopes kind of went up in flames. Unless Capcom pulls a surprise shadow drop at The Game Awards, it’s time to accept that the five-year streak is over.
In fairness, Capcom had a solid run. It kicked off with the Resident Evil 2 remake in 2019, which received a ton of love from critics. In 2020, we got hit with the Resident Evil 3 remake and the multiplayer flop Resident Evil: Resistance (yeah, that happened). Things bounced back with Resident Evil Village in 2021, and then 2022 gave us Resident Evil Re:Verse—though we’d rather not talk about that one. Finally, 2023 blessed us with the Resident Evil 4 remake, which pretty much carried the streak on its back.
No New Game in 2024, But It’s Not the End
Even if Resident Evil takes a break in 2024, it’s not like Capcom is packing up shop. Rumors are swirling about what’s cooking in the development kitchen, with whispers of at least three new Resident Evil games on the way. Reliable insiders have dropped hints about Resident Evil 9, a Code: Veronica remake, and even a Resident Evil Zero remake.
The next big title seems to be Resident Evil 9, which is expected to keep up the first-person perspective introduced in Resident Evil 7 and continued in Village. If leaks are accurate, RE9 will tie up some loose ends in the story that started with Resident Evil 7, which should be good news for anyone invested in that narrative arc.
Possible Remakes on the Horizon
The hype doesn’t stop there. A Code: Veronica remake has been on fans’ wish lists for years, and if Capcom pulls it off, it might patch up some of the plot holes scattered through the remakes. There’s also buzz about a Resident Evil Zero remake, which could flesh out some backstory for players who’ve only experienced the more recent remakes.
Let’s not forget about the potential for a second remake of the original Resident Evil. Yeah, you read that right. Some less-than-reliable sources are floating the idea of another remake for the 1996 classic.
This would be the second time it’s remade, with the first one landing back in 2002 on the GameCube. Imagine playing the whole series with the over-the-shoulder camera style from the recent games—sounds pretty sweet, right?
What’s Left?
If Capcom follows through on these rumors, the only games left untouched would be Resident Evil 5 and the hot mess that is Resident Evil 6. Commercially, RE6 didn’t flop, but a lot of folks out there rank it as the worst mainline game in the series.
Whether Capcom has the guts to try and redeem it with a remake remains to be seen. Honestly, focusing on Resident Evil 5 might be the smarter move if they want to wrap up the remake saga on a high note.
One thing’s for sure—just because there’s no Resident Evil game coming out in 2024 doesn’t mean we’re at the end of the line. Capcom isn’t done milking this cash cow yet, and we can probably expect to see Resident Evil 9, 10, 11, and beyond. The series will likely keep coming at us as long as people are willing to open their wallets for it.
