The Essentials

Alan Wake 2: The Lake House is coming in hot as the final DLC for Alan Wake 2, Remedy’s 2023 survival horror masterpiece. This time, the expansion brings in fresh connections to the Control (2019) universe.

Worth noting, Night Springs, the first expansion, hit in June, but now, The Lake House arrives next week for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and PC (via Epic Games Store).

The trailer dropped during the Xbox Partner Preview on October 17, giving us a glimpse into what’s coming. Buckle up folks, here are the key details.

Release Date for Alan Wake 2: The Lake House

Mark your calendars—October 22. That’s the day The Lake House launches alongside the physical editions of Alan Wake 2.

The content will be included in the Expansion Pass, which is part of both the Deluxe Edition (digital and physical).

If you’re sitting on the Standard Edition, don’t worry. You can upgrade to Deluxe for around $18 to get your hands on the new content.

Story Details for Alan Wake 2: The Lake House

The Lake House is set at, you guessed it, the Lake House, a research facility run by the Federal Bureau of Control (FBC), nestled near Cauldron Lake. Fans of Control might get déjà vu since this location has popped up before in the series.

Also, it’s not the first crossover moment between the two franchises (Jesse Faden from Control starred in the Night Springs DLC).

In this new expansion, players step into the shoes of Agent Estevez, who’s no stranger to paranormal craziness. She heads to the Lake House to chat with the research team about the whole Wake situation.

However when she arrives, the place is trashed. A massive event—a reality-bending mess—has brought chaos after some careless folks collided with the Dark Place. The DLC’s timeline runs in parallel with the early stages of Alan Wake 2, meaning by the time Estevez and Saga cross paths, The Lake House events have already gone down.

New Features in Alan Wake 2: The Lake House

Unlike Night Springs, The Lake House isn’t about standalone activities. It’s a more linear, survival horror experience, sticking closer to the main game’s vibe. However, the plot does expand Remedy’s universe a bit more. The trailer even teases a familiar face—Dylan Faden, the brother of Jesse Faden and a villain from Control.

One big new feature? You can finally play as Estevez. Another fresh addition is a new enemy type: The Painted. These creepy, faceless monsters with freakishly long limbs are giving off major Alien: Romulus hybrid vibes.

According to game director Kyle Rowley, these baddies are born from an “intersection of reality and art,” which is kind of the whole theme of the DLC. They can move in and out of the supernatural paint on surfaces and will come at you with brutal melee attacks.

How to Play Alan Wake 2: The Lake House

Once you’ve wrapped up Alan Wake 2, The Lake House becomes accessible straight from the main menu. But for those just jumping in, the DLC integrates seamlessly into the main campaign.

According to Rowley, weaving the expansions into the game’s core “improved the pacing,” making the experience feel more cohesive.

With the release just around the corner, players will finally get to dive into this eerie new chapter. Prepare to face The Painted, explore The Lake House, and uncover more about the chaotic world of Alan Wake.
